Driftless House was founded in the summer of 2009 to help writers applying to graduate creative writing programs. Our name reflects our roots in the Midwest: we all met in Iowa City, while we were attending the Iowa Writers' Workshop in Fiction and Poetry as part of the classes of 2007, 2008, and 2009.
Most of our mentoring services are intensive, 1-on-1, online tutorials. We felt we could use the critical rigor we learned at Iowa, as well as our experiences applying to master's and doctoral programs, to help applicants shape their application lists and improve their writing portfolios before sending them off to programs. Our services also include Statement of Purpose advising, copy-editing, and advice on summer program applications. While we can't guarantee specific results in this highly subjective and competitive field, we only work with writers we think are ready to apply to graduate creative writing programs. We look forward to sharing the successes of the 40+ young artists we've worked with in the past as programs make their admissions decisions for fall 2010.
Driftless House poets and writers have appeared in Best American Short Stories, Best New American Voices, Pushcart Prize - Best of the Small Presses, Best American Nonrequired Reading, Playboy, Poetry, Harvard Review, Missouri Review and Virginia Quarterly Review. Some of us have also received notable fellowships, including the Stegner Fellowship at Stanford, the Michener Fellowship at Iowa, and the Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing Fellowship at UW-Madison. Our writers include:
